Operational Risk Mitigation
The Problem:
Working with one of the largest independent firms of Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors in the UK, we were engaged to evaluate the risks to be business presented through technology infrastructure. One of their biggest issues was that during IT downtime, staff could not conduct billed work. As with many Accountancy firms, they feared the operational risk presented by introducing new technology into the firm, but they knew that they needed a solution to reduce IT downtime that was causing so much lost revenue.
The Solution:
Condor conducted a detailed analysis exercise across all regional offices, working with internal IT staff. This led to interviewing chargeable staff and a third party supplier of IT services and support.
We identified where changes should be made in a number of areas that were critical to the business. These included;
- Immediate test of the disaster recovery plan
- Changes to the way backups are implemented and recovered
- Modification to the structure and service level of third party support agreements
- Modification to hosting provider and bandwidth agreements
- Implementation of a company wide email archive
- Consolidation of hardware
The exercise calculated that the cost of downtime, across the entire business was £60,000 per hour.
A detailed risk mitigation plan was authored, which identified, and then created clear goals, responsibilities and deliverables for the migration to a new system, which met the evolving requirements of the firm.
A member of staff was recruited to be the IT Manager for the business. This role took responsibility for managing the third party providers and so the entire infrastructure.
Key Performance Indicators:
The plan was delivered on time and within budget, clearly identifying the current issues in the business and presenting a detailed action plan with assigned responsibilities. The next phase of the programme will be to implement recommendation made in the risk mitigation plan.
